MiniDisc player, catalytic converter, bird cage, miniature rug, ribbon, sheet metal, conduction speaker, tweeter, looping audio (5min 42sec)

The rooster is one of the twelve signs of the Chinese Zodiac and the only bird of the entire group. 2017 is the Year of the Rooster. This time round its ‘heavenly branch’ is Fire (Wu Xing), the common attributes of which are the colour red, summer, the South, Mars, warmth, enthusiasm and creativity.

Wu Xing is also associated with organs of the body, including the Heart (yin), the small intestine(yang), the tongue and the body’s natural pulse. This piece is composed primarily from deconstructed contact mic recordings of the artist’s body and mixed with distorted primordial clucks of a rooster at dawn.

This piece was exhibited at the Chinese Open 2017: Le Coq Artistes, Q-Park Leicester Square, 29 January – 5 February 2017 along with works by many other local and international artists.
